Most special education doctoral students are full-time and complete their degree in approximately four years, although programs of shorter or longer duration are possible. A timeline for major program milestones is listed below:

 

Year 1:

  • Begin coursework/PhD Research Area Requirement
  • Select a permanent advisor and complete the Advisor Request Form
  • First Year Review
  • Undergo annual student progress review



    Year 2:

  • Complete required coursework (i.e., research methods & foundational special education courses)
  • Complete early research project
  • Undergo annual student progress review

     

    Year 3:

  • Complete supplemental coursework
  • Complete qualifying exams
  • Complete mentorship competency
  • Undergo annual student progress review

     

    Years 4/5:

  • Finish doctoral competencies (i.e., teaching, mentoring, dissemination activities, etc.)
  • Undergo annual student progress review
  • Successfully complete preliminary examination
  • Complete and defend dissertation
  • Graduate
