Mental Health Counseling Master's Program Practicum and Internship Opportunities

  • Clinical fieldwork placements are required for state licensing at the Master’s level.
  • Students complete clinical training at campus and community agencies focused on trainee development. Fieldwork sites currently include: University of Illinois Counseling Center, Disability Resources and Educational Services, Counseling Psychology Training Clinic, and local private practices and community mental health agencies.
  • If you wish to inquire about establishing a community training partnership providing supervision and training to our students in our program, please contact Dr. Jackie Beard, Clinical Fieldwork Coordinator jcbeard@illinois.edu)

Master's Practicum

  • The master’s practicum (100 hours) occurs in the second semester of the 1st year of the program.
  • This experience, in partnership with a community or campus agency providing mental health services, addresses both theoretical and applied aspects of counseling psychology, and will typically include opportunities for assessment, direct interventions with clients, consultation with other professionals, and psychoeducational services.
  •  Students will also learn about ethical and legal issues, counseling processes, and begin the development of a coherent approach to treatment based on science and theory.

Master’s Internship

  • The master’s internship (600 hours) occurs over two semesters in the 2nd year of the program.
  • This intensive experience, in partnership with a community or campus agency providing mental health services, is designed to prepare you for increased autonomy in your clinical practice. Like practicum, this experience addresses both theoretical and applied aspects of counseling psychology, and will typically include opportunities for assessment, direct interventions with clients, consultation with other professionals, and psychoeducational services.
  • Students continue to gain exposure to a range of ethical and legal issues, counseling processes, and further strengthen their conceptualization and intervention skills.
