This talk focuses on how Asian American histories must be necessarily woven into the fabric of U.S. history through race, citizenship, immigration, and school segregation. The passage of the TEAACH (Teaching of Equitable Asian American Community History) Act in the state of Illinois in 2021 provides opportunities to embed inclusive histories in K-12 classrooms where democratic citizenship education can be realized.
Yoon Pak is professor and head of the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership. She is also a core faculty member in the Department of Asian American Studies at Illinois. Her research and teaching focus on the history of American education in the 20th century as it relates to racial minorities and immigrant groups.
