Technology-Enhanced Collaboration, Equity, and Empowerment
In this talk, Dr. Borge will argue that higher-order collaborative processes are essential for learning and development, yet often missing in technology-enhanced learning contexts. The development of collaborative expertise (i.e., the ability to understand, manage, and improve collaborative sense-making processes) is essential to academic and life-long success. However, not all students are allowed equal opportunities to develop these types of competencies. Dr. Borge approaches computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) from an equity lens and she uses technology to develop diverse students’ collaborative expertise alongside their ability to see themselves as problem solvers and designers of their own learning experiences.
Dr. Borge will share examples from six years of work with a human-centered design-based afterschool program. The emphasis of this project has shifted to a focus on co-design for the purpose of helping learners become aware of the artificial designs around them and how they interact with them. In doing so, they work with learners to transform designs to better meet their humanistic needs.
