Equity Visits: Integrating Equity and Instruction in Educational Leadership Practice
In this talk, Dr. Rachel Roegman discusses the challenges that school leaders face in integrating their work on equity with their work on instruction. She shares her research on the elusiveness of equity, particularly racial equity, even in professional development focused on supporting equity-focused leadership practice; she then introduces equity visits, an innovate practice that supports school leaders in combining a strong focus on instruction with explicit, intentional efforts to address systemic inequities in their schools and districts. Designed by practitioners, equity visits attune leaders to the complexities of equity and instruction that are often masked. In so doing, these visits provide opportunities for leaders to develop policies, initiatives, and practices to confront those inequities, thereby improving access, opportunity, experiences, and outcomes for underserved, minoritized youth.
