Speaker Information: Z Nicolazzo
As recently as 2014, the United States was reportedly experiencing a "transgender tipping point," one replete with positive signs of visibility and public overtures from Obama administration. Despite critiques to the contrary, what is now clear is there exists a transgender backlash, and trans people are being used to politically pry apart the liberal/progressive base. In this talk, Dr. Z Nicolazzo will discuss how the use of the trans community to further wedge politics is built upon misogyny, racism, and sexism. Dr. Nicolazzo will discuss how this political strategy impacts transgender people in K-12 and higher education, and also explore ideas for furthering transformational thinking and practice.
Dr. Z Nicolazzo is an assistant professor in the Adult and Higher Education program and a faculty associate in the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Northern Illinois University. Z is the author of Trans* In College: Transgender Students' Strategies for Navigating Campus Life and the Institutional Politics of Inclusion.
