New Belongings Through Mathematics Education

Champaign , USA
Rochelle Gutierrez

This talk at the College of Education at Illinois will cover challenges that Sweden faces educationally in the meeting and welcoming of a new population of refugees.

Speaker Information:

Eva Noren, Kicki Skog, and Paola Valero

After Germany, Sweden is the European country that has taken in the second largest number of refugees. Many of these newly arrived people in Sweden are young and alone.

This talk will cover challenges that Sweden faces educationally in the meeting and welcoming of a new population of refugees. In particular, the talk will cover the tension between national policies and educational practices that, while appealing to inclusion, operate in modes of differentiation and segregation. The three speakers from Stockholm University will use the case of mathematics education to exemplify these tensions.

A light lunch will be provided.
