Volunteer Abroad at Elite Canadian Private Schools: Producing Young Elites Through Regulated Racial Encounters

Champaign , USA

Speaker Information:

Dr. Leila Angod, Center for Global Studies Visiting Scholar & Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Urban Schooling at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto.

Please join us for lunch and a guest lecture with Dr. Leila Angod!

The production of young elites as caring national leaders and global citizens requires regulated racial encounters. At elite secondary schools, volunteer abroad is a particularly salient mode of encounter, one that works through a humanitarian relation that is imbricated in circuits of colonialism and global racial capitalism.

In this presentation, Dr. Angod draws on her ethnographic study of a group of girls from an elite Canadian secondary school who travelled to South Africa for the purpose of volunteering. She discusses enchantment, a technique that enables girls, both white and of colour, to leverage gendered racial hierarchies for the purpose of securing ruling class status.

Dr. Angod’s research engages what is at stake in processes of becoming through the bodies of racial others.
