Careers in DE, LDL, and HRD: Online Student Alumni Panel - Education at Illinois, Online Programs

As part of our series, Careers in Education, we feature three online student alumni who earned their graduate degrees in Education in the areas of Diversity and Equity, Learning Design and Leadership, and Human Research Development.

The panelists will discuss their current positions and how their studies at the College of Education at Illinois impacted their professional pursuits. The second half of the session will enable participants to pose career-specific questions to the panelists and learn about how others might move into or advance within their fields. You could join us for the entire session, or the second half focused on career-specific questions. This event aims to inform current and prospective students about career possibilities.

Dr. Valerie Jones was named president of the largest of eight Lone Star College (LSC) campuses in June of 2022, having previously served as the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. LSC-CyFair serves 22,400+ students through university transfer, dual credit, and workforce programs. Before moving to the Houston area, she served six years as the vice president for instruction at Odessa College. During that time, they were awarded the Aspen Institute Rising Star Award in 2017 and 2019, and the 2018 Achieving the Dream Leah Meyer Austin Award for transformative student success outcomes. Before coming to Texas, Dr. Jones supported North Carolina community college students for 15 years, where her passion for community college students began as English faculty. Her degrees in Secondary Education, Multicultural Literature, and Gender Studies, and her Doctor of Education from the University of Illinois in Diversity and Equity in Higher Education, along with her foundation as a faculty member, shape her approach to student-centered, equity-minded instructional reform.

Dr. Juliana Mozachi Sandri is a lawyer and earned her Doctor of Education in 2022 from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Her concentration is in Human Resource Development, and her research is on Adult Learning in Museums. She received the Lemann Graduate Fellowship from the university during her doctoral studies. Dr. Sandri works for Banco Central do Brasil as the Head of Conduct Supervision of the Brazilian financial system. She has been working for the Brazilian government for 16 years in different positions; she was the head of the corporate university of Banco Central do Brasil for eight years.

Dr. Ken Jones is an Educational Consultant based in the Chicago Area. Dr. Jones received his Doctor of Education with a concentration in Learning Design Leadership from the University of Illinois. His current research examines how video games can be used to motivate and enhance learning for K-12 students. His work examines how video games are embedded with vital components of academic learning (critical thinking, strategy, logical determination, trial, and error) and will provide individuals with a clear understanding and deeper perspective of academic courses. Dr. Jones’ studies expound upon academics by demonstrating that the content in video games can also be applied to acquiring essential knowledge of daily living skills.
