William Chandler Bagley Doctoral Scholarship

Description of Award

The College of Education designates outstanding, currently enrolled, doctoral students as Bagley Scholars.  These awards are funded from gifts of alumni and friends of the College of Education and named after William Chandler Bagley, an early Director of the former School of Education, who is known for his insistence that both formal training and experience are needed to promote good educational practice.  Scholars are eligible for a maximum of two Bagley awards and receive a taxable award of $2,000 payable in two installments (1/2 in fall; 1/2 in spring) which will be applied to their student account. 

Applicant deadline

Friday, February 12, 2010.

Applications and supporting material must be e-mailed directly to applicant’s departmental contact.  Late applications and supporting material will not be accepted.

Conditions of the award

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  1. Maintain full-time student status (minimum of 12 hours per fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters) or be considered a full-time student by departmental criteria
  2. Maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
  3. Attend the College of Education Student Recognition Brunch.

Applicant procedures

To be considered for this award, applicants must submit via e-mail the application and supporting material directly to their departmental contact by the applicant deadline:

  1. Graduate student award application.
  2. Provide a copy of University of Illinoins at Urbana-Champaign academic history and GPA from SIS [Student Information System] (provided by department).
  3. Submit a 2-3 page current curriculum vita, including research and/or teaching experiences, service awards and honors.
  4. Submit a 1-2 page current personal statement.
  5. Provide two current letters of recommendation from College of Education faculty.  Faculty must e-mail recommendation letter directly to applicant’s departmental contact.

Department procedures

  1. Determine applicants to nominate.  Each department has been allotted a specific number of nominations based on weighted averages of full-time graduate doctoral students.   This year, CI, EPS, EOL, and EPSY may submit 5 nominees; HRE and SPED may submit 3 nominees. 
  2. Review application material for completeness.
  3. Prepare an electronic copy of the applicant’s UIUC academic history and current GPA from SIS [Student Information System-Course Hist and GPA Hist].
  4. Include a statement, if applicable, from the department head confirming that the student will meet departmental criteria of full-time status in the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters. 
  5. Save all materials into one PDF file using the following naming convention:  applicant’s netid_bagleydoc_2010-11
  6. Place PDF file in the appropriate department folder located at \\files.ed.uiuc.edu\Groups\GSAAT\department name\ by Friday, February 26, 2010 

Note:  Rankings can be submitted by the department but will not be used as a primary consideration for committee decisions.
