Steven Aragon elected President-elect of national organization
Steven Aragon (Associate Professor) was elected President-elect of the Association for Career and Technical Education Research (ACTER) at their annual conference in December. ACTER is an organization for researchers who focus on work-related education and training in secondary schools, community and technical colleges, private sector training programs, higher education institutions, corrections programs, international settings, and government agencies.
At the conference, he also received the Outstanding Symposium Award for his symposium titled “Effective Approaches to Getting Published in the CTER and JCTE.”

Carol Packard receives award from College of Medicine
Carol Packard (Ph.D. Candidate) has been named the "2006 Academic Professional of the Year" by the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where she works as the Associate Director of Clinical Affairs. This year, she wrote and received two grants to develop cultural competence and global health initiatives for the medical school. As a result of this work, several medical students will be doing clinical work in underdeveloped countries. Additionally, she developed a new online global health course for the college.

Ten HRE faculty members and graduate students were named to the "Incomplete List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by their Students" for the summer semester of 2006. This list is complied from the results of the Instructor and Course Evaluation forms (ICES).

HRE faculty and graduate students attend global colloquium in Brazil
Scott Johnson (Professor & Department Head), Jenny Daugherty (Ph.D. Student) and Yong Zeng (Ph.D. Student), represented the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE) at the annual Global Colloquium of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The conference was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 9-12.

The HRE Department has opened a search for an assistant or associate professor, specializing in educational technology. The position will start in January 2007. The deadline for applications is September 15, 2006.

Scott Johnson named among top 100 alumni at Minnesota
Scott Johnson (Professor & Department Head) has been selected by his alma mater, the University of Minnesota's College of Education and Human Development, as one of their top 100 Distinguished Alumni. Professor Johnson was honored at the college’s centennial gala in May.

Ellinger, Iliff, and Johnson receive college awards
Andrea Ellinger (Assistant Professor), Elaine Iliff (Account Technician), and Scott Johnson (Professor & Department Head) received 2006 College of Education awards. They were recognized at the college’s awards ceremony in May.
Ellinger received the “Outstanding Faculty Award for Service,” which is given to a faculty member who consistently demonstrates exemplary service at the campus, community, state, and/or national levels. Iliff received the “Distinguished Staff Award,” which is given to a staff member who demonstrates excellence through work, helps develop others, and enhances the image of the department/college. Johnson received the “Distinguished Teaching Career Award,” which recognizes a sustained commitment to and excellence in teaching, course development, and program building.

Consuelo Waight receives teaching excellence award

Consuelo Waight (Ph.D. 2002) received the "Teaching Excellence Award" from the University of Houston, where she serves as assistant professor of human development and consumer sciences. Her classes in HRD and e-learning are highly sought after by students, due to her real-world approach to teaching.

Gail Taylor presents at symposia
Gail Taylor (Ph.D. student) served as an invited presenter at three symposia held recently. The first symposium was held at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill on April 8, 2006. The symposium, "Attack of the Blog: Legal Horrors in the Workplace," was organized by the editors of the North Carolina Journal of Law and Technology. Presenters addressed the manner in which blogging technology is transforming business organization practices.
She was also one of the invited presenters at the 7th Annual Conference in Human Resources, hosted by the Central Illinois Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management in Springfield, IL, held in April. She presented an interactive session, "Technology for the Future: How to Manage Change vs. Being Managed by Change" where participants explored the manner in which Internet-based and mobile technologies are being used in workplace settings and offered advice on how to develop appropriate use policies to manage employee technology usage.
The last session will be at the University of Illinois Faculty Summer Institute 2006, to be held in May. Her session explores how mobile information and communication devices can be used to support teaching and learning in educational and workplace settings.

James Leach receives mentoring award
Inside Illinois
James Leach (Professor and Associate Dean) was recognized along with fifteen faculty members, three academic professionals, and three teaching assistants during the annual Instructional Awards banquet. Professor Leach received the "Campus Award for Excellence in Mentoring Graduate Students." This prestigious award is co-sponsored by the Provost's Office and the Graduate College.

Jan Magree awarded grant from Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership
Jan Magree (Master’s student) was awarded a research grant from the Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Illinois. Her project, Social and Psychological Barriers Facing Women Entrepreneurs in the 21st Century, addresses the challenges that women face when starting and operating their own businesses (including financing, networking, and myths about women entrepreneurs).

Peter Kuchinke named editor of Human Resource Development International
Peter Kuchinke (Associate Professor) has been named the Editor-in-Chief of Human Resource Development International (HRDI). HRDI, published by Routledge, is one of the premier scholarly journals in the HRD field. The Academy of HRD and the University Forum for HRD (based in the U.K.) cosponsor the journal.

Andrea Ellinger given research excellence award
At last week’s Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) conference in Columbus, OH, Andrea Ellinger (Assistant Professor) was named as the recipient of the Richard A. Swanson Research Excellence Award. This honor is given for the outstanding Human Resource Development Quarterly article each year. This is the second time in three years that she has received the award. Her article, “Contextual factors influencing informal learning in a workplace setting: The case of "Reinventing Itself Company,” appeared in the fall 2005 issue.
At the conference, Professor Ellinger was also installed as a member of AHRD’s board of directors.

HRE students and faculty present research papers at Academy of HRD Conference
Over 30 HRE students and faculty attended the Academy of Human Resource Development Conference (February 23-26, 2006) in Columbus, OH. Twenty one of those students presented their research projects: Tzu-Jung Chen, Insik Cho, Jason Cho, Edgard Cornachione, Khalil Dirani, Deb Fisher, Mara Freeman, Rod Githens, Jacqueline Gitonga, EunJee Kim, Eunok Alice Kim, Sooyoung Kim, Martin Maurer, Carol Packard, Johnna Parker, Olga Shinkareva, Su Jin Son, Gail Taylor, Ya-Ting Teng, Laura Valenziano, and Yu-Lin Wang. Three faculty members had research presentations: Angela Benson, Andrea Ellinger, and Scott Johnson.
