The Sustainability Education Graduate Certificate (SE CERT) program trains individuals who aspire to be educational researchers, teachers, and school administrators, community stakeholders, and leaders in policy, business, and non-profit work in developing and delivering education- and communication-based to climate change. Coursework encompasses the social, political, economic, and ethical issues that define Sustainability Education and its development, including its relationship to sustainable development and human rights, as well as future challenges in addressing climate change. Sustainability Education is increasingly seen as a necessary approach to engage the wider public about the complex climate crisis that affects people at multiple scales across the globe. With commitments to multiple perspectives, equity and human rights, and strong traditions in the Global South and Indigenous history, Sustainability Education addresses the ways that the environment and climate change intersect with justice, poverty, and inequality, with a focus on educating diverse audiences across the lifespan. Unlike other sustainability or general environmental education programs, Sustainability Education focuses on the social and political impacts of climate change on people and society, specifically through schools and nonformal educational spaces, as well as non-profit and NGOs, and the pedagogical tools that address climate change with both hope and urgency.
