2025 AERA Awardees

Perennially, College of Education at Illinois scholars are actively involved in the world’s largest gathering of education researchers—the American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting.

The 2025 AERA Annual Meeting, held in Denver, Colorado from April 23-27, is themed "Research, Remedy, and Repair: Toward Just Education Renewal." The National Council on Measurement in Education holds its Annual Meeting in conjunction with AERA, and Education at Illinois faculty, postdoc and visiting scholar, graduate student, and staff participation is robust: 40 faculty members are delivering 88 presentations, 55 graduate students are set to give 79 presentations, four post docs and visiting scholars are giving 10 presentations and two staff members will speak on two projects.

Additionally, congratulations to these Education at Illinois scholars for their well-deserved 2025 AERA awards:

Rochelle GutierrezRochelle Gutiérrez, Professor, C&I

2025 Distinguished Scholar Award, Research in Mathematics Education SIG
Gutiérrez, professor of Curriculum & Instruction, has been awarded the Distinguished Scholar Award by the AERA Research in Mathematics Education Special Interest Group. She is being recognized for her scholarship on issues of identity and power in mathematics education, focusing on how race, class, and language affect teaching and learning and will deliver the SIG/RME invited address at the 2025 Annual Meeting.

 

Paul BrunoPaul Bruno, Assistant Professor, EPOL

Outstanding Reviewer Award, AERA Open
Bruno, an assistant professor of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, has been named an Outstanding Reviewer for the journal AERA Open during 2024, recognized for rendering outstanding professional service to the journal, to AERA, and to education research. AERA journals employ rigorous peer review on all submitted manuscripts, and editors rely on expert peer reviewers to identify the highest quality scholarship for publication.

 

Christopher GetowiczChristopher Getowicz, Ph.D. Student, EPOL

Graduate Student Paper Award, Division F
Getowicz, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, is being recognized by AERA Division F: History and Historiography for his winning paper, “The Making of Segregated Education Minneapolis, 1945-1972.
