In addition, all applicants must:

  1. Pass the Illinois Certification Testing System Test of Basic Skills prior to admission. For the February application period, applicants must take the Basic Skills test no later than the last exam administered in the fall semester (typically given in November) preceding the application date. For the June application period, it is recommended that applicants take the test no later than June 4. Applicants will not be admitted unless they have passed the Basic Skills Test by the deadline.  Register for the test online. To prepare for the test, review the study guides and take the practice test on the Illinois Certification Testing System web site.  An additional practice diagnostic test can be found at www.basicskillsprep.org/login.jsp. To gain access, click on “Register Student” and enter the UI passcode of NJ33AUI8GU.
  2. Provide evidence of having 50 hours of formal experience working with children or youth comparable to the age-level of students served in the program for which application is made.
  3. Have a competitive Illinois and cumulative GPA. Applicants must have at least a 2.50 Illinois and cumulative grade point average at the time of application.
  4. Demonstrate a high-level written communication (quality of writing, thoughtfulness about education, reflective thinking).
  5. Complete prerequisite coursework. The following courses have been identified as prerequisites for entry into the major. Completion of the courses before entry serves two principal purposes: (1) it provides evidence of an applicant's prospects for success in the advanced portion of the program, and (2) it helps to ensure completion of the entire program in a timely manner. Applicants who have not completed or are not enrolled in the prerequisite courses at the time of application may be at a competitive disadvantage for admission.
    • Satisfactory completion of Composition I.
    • Two years of one language other than English in high school or through the second level course in college must be completed by desired term of entry.

Additional eligibility requirements include the successful completion of the courses listed below, for the specific major of interest.
