Content Area Course Requirements

Content Area Courses: An undergraduate major in English or 32 semester hours of Language Arts. Either option must include coursework from the below list.  An audit will be completed after admission and you will be notified of any deficiencies.

• One course in the introductory study of literature
• One course in English literature
• One course in American literature
• One course in multicultural literature
• One course in study of works of Shakespeare
• One advanced course in descriptive grammar
  

Professional Sequence Course Requirements:

• Year One Spring Semester
  • CI 401 E Introductory Teaching in a Diverse Society
  • CI 473 Disciplinary Literacy
• Year Two Fall Semester
  • CI 403 E Teaching a Diverse High School Student Population
  • CI/EPSY 485 Assessing Student Performance
  • SPED 405 General Educator's Role in SPED *or*
  • SPED 517 Disability Issues in SPED
• Year Two Spring Semester
  • CI 404 E Teaching and Assessing Secondary School Students
  • EDPR 442 Educational Practice in Secondary Education (Student Teaching)

Prior to Student Teaching

• Pass the ILTS English Language Arts content-area test.

Minimum GPA Requirements

• Content and Professional Education GPA: 2.5
• Graduate GPA: 3.0
• *Note: State rules mandate that no course with a grade lower than C can be used towards licensure, endorsement, or approvals.  This means courses with a C- or lower cannot be used. 

Master Degree Requirements

In addition to the above professional sequence, students must complete the following to obtain a Master's degree:

• Three 500-level courses in Education (CI, EOL, EPOL, EPS, EPSY, HRD, SPED) or two 500-level courses in Education if SPED 517 is taken
• One approved 4-credit-hour foundations course
