Strategic AI Implementation and District Policy Development for Superintendents

Strategic AI Implementation and District Policy Development is a job-embedded microcredential built for working K-12 superintendents in Illinois. Across four modules, you will produce four deliverables your district can use immediately: a district AI policy addressing privacy, transparency, and ethical use; a 12-to-24 month strategic implementation roadmap connected to ISBE priorities; a stakeholder communication package for your board, staff, and community; and a reflective analysis of your own leadership through the process. All coursework happens asynchronously in Canvas and CyberScholar, the University of Illinois's AI-powered platform, where you create your work and receive formative feedback grounded in Illinois legislation and current research before submitting for instructional evaluation. Enrollment is rolling, with up to 12 months to complete the work at your own pace. Your 40 Professional Development Hours are reported to ISBE within 14 business days.

Module 1: Articulate AI Literacy and Its Foundational Principles
Build a working understanding of what AI is, how it already shows up across your district community, and what responsible implementation looks like at the state and national level. You'll develop the course's foundational artifact: a comprehensive district AI literacy policy covering definitions, educator and student guidelines, data privacy, transparency, ethics, and accountability.

Module 2: Develop District-Wide AI Policies
Turn AI literacy into a district strategy, examining how AI is reshaping learning and where it strengthens rather than replaces existing practice. You'll create a 12-24 month strategic implementation roadmap that ties AI literacy to state priorities, district values, professional development, and continuous improvement. 

Module 3: Create Strategic Implementation Plans
Move from what you'll do to how you'll bring others along, drawing on a practitioner's account of what AI genuinely does well and where it falls short, and on the governance role of the school board. You'll produce a multimedia stakeholder communication package that introduces your district's AI initiative to your board, staff, and community in tailored, audience-appropriate formats. 

Module 4: Communicate AI Policies Effectively
In this capstone, you'll step back and make sense of the district policy, implementation roadmap, and communication package you built across the course. You'll compose a reflective analysis that connects your AI leadership work to your district's educational values and your growth as a leader who navigates complex, high-stakes decisions.
