Bilingual and English as a Second Language Endorsements

Required Course Sequence

18-20 hours

It is recommended that the courses are taken in this order.  CI 433 or CI 446 should be taken first, and CI 517 should always be taken last.

Clinical Experience Requirement:  In addition to the coursework, Illinois requires 100 clock hours or 3 months of teaching experience in a bilingual or ESL classroom.  For additional Illinois requirements please see the Council on Teacher Education's website.

Exam Requirement: For the Bilingual Endorsement, successful completion of a Language Proficiency Test for an Education License with Stipulations Endorsed as Transitional Bilingual in the non-English language to be taught is required.

For students already holding a Professional Educator License (PEL): Upon completion of the program, contact Brenda Clevenger Evans from the Council on Teacher Education to have the endorsement added to the PEL.
