Professor Jennifer Delaney chimes in on college costs in public square forum
by The College of Education / Oct 11, 2012
Jennifer Delaney, assistant professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, was recently asked to contribute to a Zócalo Public Square forum titled "Private College Stoked, Public College Broke."
"Both public and private institutions suffered in the last recession, but there is increasingly cause to be concerned about a growing stratification between elite public and private universities," Delaney wrote in her contribution to the forum.
"State support for public higher education tends to be cyclical. However, the length of time to recovery following a cut in state general appropriations has been increasing," Delaney wrote. "Whereas recoveries were swift in the 1980s, they slowed in the 1990s and stagnated in the 2000s."
Zócalo Public Square is a self-described not-for-profit daily ideas exchange that blends digital humanities journalism and live events. It exists to "foster healthier, more cohesive communities by tackling important contemporary questions in an accessible, non-partisan, and broad-minded spirit." Professor Delaney joined the College of Education in 2009, and earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education from Stanford University. Her research focuses on state and federal higher education funding.
