Speaker Information: Dr. Fazal Rizvi
The Global Studies in Education program at UIUC was developed two decades ago to provide students an opportunity to engage with the processes of globalization, and explore how global forces, connections, and imaginations, as they were theorized and debated then, steered the language of educational reform around the world and challenged educational institutions to consider the implications of globalization for educational practice.
Two decades later, the discourses of globalization have undergone major shifts, with the emergence of anti-globalization, populist nationalist sentiments. Yet global forces and connections remain strong and consequential, linked, for example, to developments in technology, growing awareness of environmental crises, increased levels of inequalities, both within and across nations, and various geopolitical tensions. In this talk, Fazal Rizvi, Emeritus Professor of Global Studies in Education at the University of Melbourne, as well as at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will discuss how these shifts demand rethinking the challenges of research and teaching in the field of Global Studies in Education.
