WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION where we embrace a threefold mission of teaching, research, and public service. Within this mission, faculty members address issues that face special and general education as rapidly changing world demographics, commerce, and technology continue to challenge schooling in America. From its inception, the Department has emphasized the interdependence of research and teacher education. Federal and state funding supports graduate research in infancy and early childhood special education, the education of all learners with disabilities, administration, gifted education and the transition from secondary special education to the workplace and community.

- WELCOME:
Please welcome the newest member of our faculty: Professor Karrie Shogren. She earned her PhD in Special Education at the University of Kansas in 2006, and came to UIUC from the University of Texas at Austin. Professor Shogren's research focuses on self-determination of people with disabilities, particularly students and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Dr. Shogren has addressed health and wellness for individuals with disabilities, the use of technology to provide support for greater independence and self-determination for individuals with disabilities, and social justice issues related to self-advocacy and self-determination in school, work, and the community. In the Fall 2009 semester, she is the instructor for SpEd 444 and 446. We are delighted to have Professor Shogren join our faculty.
