Admission to University Primary School: Preschool-5th grades

January 2017

Dear Families,

Thank you for your interest in University Primary School (Uni Primary School) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign! We are a Reggio Emilia inspired lab school where children are engaged in creative, challenging, and meaningful curricular inquiries using the Project Approach. At Uni Primary, children of diverse talents and abilities form a community of learners nurtured by masterful teachers attuned to best practices in early childhood and elementary education, and gifted and special education. University Primary School has 4 combined age classrooms: Preschool (ages 3-5), Kindergarten/First grades (ages 5-7 ), Second/Third grades (ages 7-9), and Fourth/Fifth grades (ages 9-11). Ages are typical for the classrooms.

University Primary School will hold a community open house for prospective families on Wednesday, February 8th from 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon for preschool and 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM for grades K-5.

Though it is ideal for families to apply to our school mid-January to mid-March (for the following fall), applications across all classrooms are accepted throughout the summer and school year. It is highly recommended to submit an application during the spring admissions period, even if applying from out of State so that you may receive full consideration during the first round of applications. A waiting list is maintained for students accepted to the school but for whom there is no available space. These waiting lists expire after one year and families must reapply during the next year spring admissions period for full consideration.

Prospective families are required to make a site visit to Uni Primary as the early part of the admissions process. We seek to make a philosophical match with families, and we want you to see our wonderful school in action! Children are encouraged to attend the site visit arranged by contacting the Office Support specialist, Christine at cwyant@illinois.edu or calling Uni Primary's Office at 217-333-3996. If your family is applying from out of state or out of country, please contact the Director, Ali Lewis at alilewis@illinois.edu for a Skype tour.

We strongly encourage you to submit all of your application materials within a week after your site visit, especially during the spring application timeframe. Your application is complete when all forms are submitted to the University Primary School office. We prefer paper copies of materials be sent through the mail or hand delivered to the Uni Primary office. Out of State/International Families should contact our office support specialist, Christine at cwyant@illinois.edu, for procedures to send admissions materials electronically. This year's first round of applicant materials are due by March 10 by 3:00 PM. Families who apply after this date may be considered in a second round of applicants or may be placed on a waiting list, accessed if openings become available.

A non-refundable $50.00 application fee is due upon completion of the application. Please make all checks payable to the University of Illinois. Families with incomes qualifying for free or reduced lunch under Federal guidelines may receive an application fee waiver and any family (regardless of income) may apply for a full to partial tuition waiver for the current school year. Families will be notified of the first consideration enrollment decisions in mid-April.

Please use the University Primary School website to access the following admissions materials or pick up an admission packet from the school office. When completing forms, you may choose to bullet point answers, write in narration, or provide short answers to questions about your child and your wishes for their school experiences. We are interested in child-created, authentic work samples as part of the application materials (rather than worksheets or parent created materials). We are looking for a philosophical match between University Primary School's approach to learning and your family expectations for schooling.
