Curriculum & Instruction

Curriculum and Instruction addresses pedagogical issues of learning and teaching, including educational technologies that are transforming the field. Faculty and students pursue cutting-edge research, seeking deep interconnections between theory and practice. Research informs the departmental focus on the preparation and continuing professional development of teachers and leaders in early childhood, elementary, and secondary education, as well as teacher education.

Education Policy, Organization & Leadership

Education Policy, Organization and Leadership fosters an interdisciplinary understanding of educational policy and practice across historical divides among philosophers, historians, social scientists, organizational theorists, policy analysts, and educational administrators. The department achieves this goal by drawing upon traditional strengths in social foundations, educational leadership, higher education, and human resource development.

Educational Psychology

Combining methodological approaches and cross-disciplinary expertise, Educational Psychology faculty and students work in collaborative teams to generate solutions to real-world educational problems related to learning and performance. They examine factors influencing negative and positive outcomes among schoolchildren; evaluate the outcomes of educational interventions; devise new methodological and measurement techniques to improve testing and research practices; and explore counseling strategies to improve well-being in school and the workplace.

Special Education

The paradigm for research around "learning disabilities" was born at Illinois. Today, Special Education continues to be a leader in research that helps people with disabilities from across the lifespan to be fully participating members of society. Faculty pursue research, teaching, and service activities that improve the quality of life for these individuals and their families. Courses, field experiences, and related activities are carefully structured to instill the knowledge and skills that students need to become effective leaders, educators, researchers, and advocates for people of all abilities.
