Kristen Lawrence, a second year master's degree student in the Department of Special Education, is the recipient of the 2013 Kathleen W. McCartan Award, bestowed by the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) to honor individuals who are making a difference in the lives of young children and their families. The award also recognizes outstanding scholarship, dedication to community and university programs, and professional leadership.

The award is given in memory of Dr. McCartan, a former DEC executive board member, devoted educator, and expert in personnel preparation. Applicants must exhibit a commitment to their community and field while actively serving young children and their families. Lawrence was nominated for the award by Professor Mary-Alayne Hughes.

"Kristen distinguishes herself as an intelligent and engaging student who has a promising future in the field," according to the DEC. "Kristen has the passion and enthusiasm to work with young children with disabilities and their families, and she generously shares this enthusiasm with those around her."

Lawrence, who received her undergraduate degree from St. Ambrose University, will be presented with a plaque during the opening ceremony of the DEC Annual International Conference, to be held October 16-18 in San Francisco. In addition, she will receive a cash award from the McCartan family, as well as complimentary registration to the conference.
