DESCRIPTION:Event Type: Seminar/SymposiumSpeaker Information: Dr. José Del
Real ViramontesThis qualitative study describes the pre-transfer experienc
es of 10 Latina/o community college students who transferred to a Predomin
antly White Institution (PWI) in Texas. Using semi-structured interviews\,
the research questions that guided this study were: 1) What is the percei
ved pre-transfer receptive culture by Latina/o community college transfer
students at Transfer Student University? and 2) How do Latina/o community
college transfer students apply their community cultural wealth to produce
the pre-transfer receptive culture to transfer to Transfer Student Univer
sity? Data was analyzed using a thematic approach in combination with the
theoretical frameworks of a transfer receptive culture (Jain\, Herrera\, B
 ernal\, &amp\; Solórzano\, 2011) and community cultural wealth (Yosso\, 20
05). Findings highlight how Latina/o community college transfer students a
 pplied their aspirational\, familial\, navigational\, and social capitals\
, to confront the conditions presented by Transfer Student University duri
ng the pre-transfer process\, highlighting their own transfer experience a
nd circumstances.Cost: FreeContact: Dr. Jennifer Delaneydelaneyj@illinois.
