Process for Linking Tutors with Teachers.

At the conclusion of the orientation meetings, the Community Involvement Coordinator puts out all the teacher requests for tutors.  The tutors sign their names in the slots they choose. Then the tutors contact the teachers by email. All remaining teacher requests are put into a binder. These spots are available for tutors who come later in the semester or for tutors wishing to increase their tutoring hours.

Orientation Provided

The Community Involvement Coordinator holds a formal orientation that tutors should attend in order to have the greatest number of tutoring slots from which to choose. The coordinator is willing to provide small group and one on one orientations for students who miss the orientations. However, because the Community Involvement Coordinator  position is part-time, these small sessions are harder to schedule and may mean that tutors get a later start in the classroom.

The tutor orientation sessions for spring 2013 tutors will be held as follows:

Describe the Procedure for Signing up for Tutoring

The Urbana School District requires that all tutors fill out an application, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a fingerprint background check. Students interested in tutoring at UHS should plan to attend an orientation meeting. They can either email the Community Involvement Coordinator a completed application or pick up and fill out a hard copy of the application at the orientation meeting. Students should call the Urbana School District Office at 384-3600 to schedule a free fingerprint check as soon as possible. They can sign up for tutoring but cannot begin working with students until they have attended their fingerprint appointment. (If they have already completed a fingerprint background with Urbana schools for a previous volunteer experience in Urbana, they do not need to do this again.)

Questions/Comments From the Coordinator?

There are usually many requests for tutors in math, Spanish and ESL. There are also many requests for tutors during study halls - where tutors would support students in a variety of subjects. Requests for English and science tutors (especially earth science) are also common.
Any tutor who can speak Spanish will be welcome in almost any class, especially health.  The Community Involvement Coordinator also receives requests from social studies, art and home economics. The coordinator would love to have tutors to support some of our SPED students too.
