Process for Linking Tutors with Teachers.

Todd Griffith is the counselor who arranges tutoring support from teachers. He also coordinates the America Reads tutors. If the volunteer coordinator receives volunteer applications to tutor, the coordinator clears the volunteers and send their request to Mr. Griffith. The coordinator arranges a school orientation for those students and Todd then connects them to the students they tutor.

Orientation Provided

Orientations are scheduled every semester-contact Coordinator for dates or to arrange an individual orientation.

Describe the Procedure for Signing up for Tutoring

Students submit both a volunteer application and criminal background form to the volunteer coordinator.  Students must clear the background check and have an orientation which includes signing the Champaign school district's Volunteer Expectation Guideline form. Students are then connected to Mr. Griffith, who arranges their volunteer placement with an instructor at JMS.  Summary of your rights under the FCRA is availble for your information.

Deadline

It depends on the volunteer commitment and their willingness to volunteer long term.  If a volunteer is only available for a semester then they must be cleared before mid-term

Questions/Comments From the Coordinator?

Our school is receptive to volunteers with commitment. Due to our location (far west side of town) we have, in the past, had many U of I volunteers start but not last long. With the new requirements that students need volunteer hours to get admitted to the College of Education, we are hopeful we will get students who honor their commitments. I continue to be an advocate for more U of I volunteers at our school.
