Certificate of Advanced Study - Director of SpEd

The Department of Special Education in the UIUC College of Education has been
approved by the Illinois State Board of Education to offer a Certificate of Advanced
Study (CAS) focus that will prepare students to become administrators of special
education programs within school districts and special education cooperative
arrangements.

Course work offered in two departments in the College of Education (the
Department of Special Education and the Department of Educational Organization
and Leadership) form the foundation of this focus. Candidates will complete courses
and clinical experiences which have been aligned with the State of Illinois Standards
for Directors of Special Education and the Illinois Professional School Leader
Standards.

  • NOTE: Candidates entering with a valid school service personnel certificate endorsed for school psychology, school social work, school counseling, or speech-language pathology will be required to take courses in special education instructional methods and curriculum planning (SpEd 446 Curriculum Development I, SpEd 447 Curriculum Development II, SpEd 448 Curriculum Development III, SpEd 440 Instructional Development I or provide proof of equivalent course work.
 
  • Candidates who did not complete a master's degree at UIUC and therefore have not fulfilled the requirements of 4 graduate hours of Educational Policy Studies and 4 graduate hours of Educational Psychology foundations courses will be required to complete those courses as part of the Certificate of Advanced Study degree.
  • Candidates coming from out of state may have to meet additional requirements in order to meet Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) state of Illinois certification requirements.  
  • Candidates may submit documentation of having met individual indicators and standards for the Director of Special Education Endorsement:  Certificate of Advanced Study Focus. Program faculty will evaluate the candidate's documentation on an individual basis. SPED 524 (DIR) will not be waived under any circumstances.
