State of Illinois' budget woes threaten Autism Program of Illinois

April is Autism Awareness Month. On April 3, Illinois lawmakers announced that $26 million in grant funding for social programs would be suspended to help close a multibillion-dollar budgetary gap. Among the programs to lose funding is the Autism Program (TAP) of Illinois, a statewide network of 13 nonprofit agencies and four universities, including the University of Illinois.

Linda Tortorelli is the resource coordinator for TAP on the Urbana campus, which is a collaborative initiative of the Department of Special Education at Illinois, as well as of human and community development.
