Tutoring Information
The SOAR (Student Opportunities for After-School Resources) program at Garden Hills Elementary School in Champaign utilizes enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who want to work with children.
Where?

When?
SOAR operates from 3:00-4:15 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at Garden Hills Elementary School in Champaign. Volunteers are asked to commit at least one day a week during the duration of the semester to work individually with a child and should be available from 2:45-4:15 on the day they tutor.
What?
University students and community members who volunteer with the SOAR after-school program provide homework and reading help to bilingual students in grades 2-5 who are most in need of some extra support. Volunteers also assist with various enrichment activities throughout the semester. Spanish-speaking skills are only necessary if working with a 2nd grader. Approximately 40 children attend the free after-school program. Tutors work with the same child throughout the semester.
Who Can Volunteer?
Anyone with. . .
- a desire to help chidren succeed.
- enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
- patience and understanding.
- Spanish-speaking skills are helpful, but are not required.
Why Volunteer?
The SOAR program provides volunteers with the opportunity to. . .
- gain exerience in an elementary school tutoring and literacy setting.
- help children from different backgrounds and cultures with homework and reading.
- practice Spanish-speaking skills in a real-life situation.
- provide a much needed and appreciated service to the local community.
- develop a close tutor/mentor relationship with a child.
