Grade Replacement Policy

Students may request eligibility for grade replacement using a grade earned in a course taken no earlier than Fall 2010. Course credit will be earned only once. The original grade will remain on the permanent record, but only the second attempt grade will be included in the GPA calculation. However, if a passing grade was received on the first attempt, but a failing grade on the second attempt, the general policy governing course repeats applies: all grades received, passed, or failed will be counted in the graduation average. Please see ss 3-309, (a) (2) except as indicated in ss 3-802 on minimum scholarship requirements for graduation in the Student Code.

A student may be eligible if:

  1. Student has not taken more than 4 distinct courses (10 semester hours maximum) for Grade Replacement.
  2. Student does not have any officially reported academic integrity infraction for this course.
  3. This course has not been previously repeated under the Grade Replacement Policy.
  4. Grade earned in the first enrollment of this course was a C-, D+, D, D- or F.
  5. Credit, topic, and grade mode of the courses for Grade Replacement request are the same.
  6. Student has not been awarded a degree from the University of Illinois.

Students must file their intent, complete and submit a Grade Replacement Form to SAAO for each course grade replacement request, during the first half of the semester – first eight weeks of the term, fourth week of the summer term, or the fourth week of an eight week course – in which the course is repeated. Students may rescind their submitted request in the first half of the same semester.  Students are not guaranteed access to a seat in the course and must register through the traditional course registration process.
