Course Descriptions:

EIL 487 BE: Introduction to Linguistics for Classroom Teachers (4 Hours)

This course is an introduction to linguistics for classroom teachers. It delineates the field (history and scope) of linguistics, and introduces key elements of linguistic analysis with accompanying theoretical analyses of syntax, morphology, phonology, the lexicon, and pragmatics. Linguistic/nativist, cognitive, interactionist, sociolinguistic/pragmatic, and sociocultural, approaches to language will be considered in addition to the role of non-linguistic factors in communication. Finally the application of linguistics to the classroom setting will be thoroughly explored.

CI 433: Foundations of Bilingual Education (4 Hours)

Analyzes historical, political, and educational influences on bilingual/ESL education, the potential of various program models to promote academic achievement, and the theoretical and practical reasons for bilingual instruction. Attention is given to the research base underlying bilingual education programs.

This course examines the history of bilingual and ESL education in the United States and the impact of policies and mandates on the education of culturally and linguistically diverse student.  Through course readings, discussions and assignments, students will develop an understanding of the theoretical foundation and rationale for bilingual education. Implementation of various bilingual and ESL programs will also be examined. This course is designed to meet the standards and course requirements for the Illinois State Board of Education Teaching Approval and Endorsement for Bilingual and ESL teachers.

EIL 489 BE: Second Language Acquisition (4 Hours)

This course is a general introduction to theories of second language acquisition (SLA). Linguistic/nativist, cognitive, interactionist, sociolinguistic/pragmatic, sociocultural, and instructed SLA will be discussed along with nonlinguistic factors that influence the second language (L2) learning process (e.g., age, anxiety, aptitude, or motivation). In addition, the application of SLA theory to the analysis of L2 interlanguage data and pedagogy will be explored.

CI 446: Culture in the Classroom (4 Hours)

This course reviews many of the social, political, and cultural factors that affect learning and teaching.  It introduces students to the fields of educational anthropology and multicultural education and to the application of cultural information to curriculum development and classroom practice. In the course, students learn how to develop and implement culturally and linguistically responsive instruction.

CI 517: Bilingual and ESL Assessment (4 Hours)

Explores the role of assessment in the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students in K-12 classrooms. The current state of assessment in the United States is analyzed as well as how assessments are used for the identification and placement of bilingual and ESL students. An overview of standardized forms of assessment at the state, district and school level is provided. Students also learn how to administer, score and evaluate language proficiency assessments and how to develop and implement classroom based assessments.

CI 477: Bilingual and ESL Methods and Materials (4 Hours)

This course focuses on bilingual and ESL curriculum development and instruction for bilingual and English learners (K-12) in a variety of language and program settings. The course emphasizes bilingual and ESL materials selection and development, bilingual and ESL literacy instruction, bilingual and ESL content area instruction, and sheltered English instruction (SIOP).
