Online Programs

The Illinois Experience - Wherever You Are

Education Online is based on the assumption that learning is a complex event that cannot be explained with a single theory of learning. Instead, it is hypothesized that quality learning environments should be based on instructional principles derived from multiple theories of learning.

Based on an analysis of existing literature and experienced-based practices, the design of our online programs builds on a conceptual framework that looks beyond the traditional paradigm of instruction and is founded on core learning theories (Contextual Learning, Social Learning, Active Learning, Reflective Learning) and guiding principles (sound instructional design, multimodal content, collaborative interaction, attention to individual differences, enhanced student motivation, avoidance of information overload). The use of multiple learning theories and guiding principles in the design of our online programs promotes and enhances instructor/student interaction as the heart of teaching and learning.
