Study Abroad in Valparaíso, Chile

OVERVIEW: This 3-credit course EPS 199: Understanding Education and English Learning in a Global Era: A Study Abroad Experience in Valparaíso, Chile focuses on education as a factor in human and national development. We will be using Chile as a case study in order to explore the nature of English language teaching in a global context. The goal of this program is for you to understand how English policy plays out in the actual classroom context as you examine teachers’ pedagogy styles, the classroom environment and students’ attitudes towards the language. During this time, you will also attend classes at Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and will engage in a number of enriching activities while learning from some of the best professors in Chilean education. You will also have the chance to immerse yourself in Chilean culture through food, museums, art, education, and national landmarks over this 3-week study abroad trip, which is designed for undergraduate education majors (but all majors are welcomed).

SERVICE PROJECT:  You will be assigned to an elementary or high school where you will work with a Chilean English teacher in his/her classroom. You will be responsible for working with the Chilean teacher in order to build a class environment that encourages language learning. During this time, you will be required to do field research so that through your data you can create a final English project for your Chilean teacher.

EXCURSIONS:  Valparaíso is a UN heritage site, so we will spend time on the weekends exploring the city as a group. We will dedicate one of these weekends to taking a day trip to Santiago, the capital of Chile, located roughly 2 hours southeast of Valparaíso. Some of these tours will be optional in case you want to explore Valparaíso, or other parts of Chile on your own.

STUDENT LIFE:  You will live with host families located in Valparaíso or Viña del Mar. Meals will be provided by your families, where you can use that time to practice your Spanish. For this course, Spanish is not required, but some knowledge is highly recommended.
