Freshman Admission to the College of Education
A beginning freshman applicant is one who applies for admission while attending high school, regardless of the amount of college credit earned, or one who has graduated from high school but completed fewer than 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of transferable college credit by the desired term of entry. All freshmen applicants to the College of Education are admitted to Pre-Teacher Education, which is a two-year curriculum designed to accommodate students who intend to major in Elementary, Early Childhood or Special Education. Students must submit an application during the second semester of the sophomore year (or second semester of freshmen year for Special Education majors) for admission consideration to one of these three degree-granting curricula in the College of Education. Applicants interested in preparing for teacher certification in secondary education should apply to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for admission to the major subject in which they will seek certification (English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, Geology (earth and space science), or history (social science).
Freshmen admission decisions are based on an evaluation of a variety of factors including high school course work, ACT composite score or SATI (we do not use SAT II for any admissions purposes), cumulative high school percentile ranking (HSPR) at the end of the junior year (an estimated rank is calculated for students attending a high school that doesn't rank), activities, service, previous work, and information provided in the student's essays. All applicants must complete the Personal Statement and should include information on their interest/experience in the intended major.
The range of students admitted to the College of Education last year in the middle 50% on ACT test score and HSPR was 25-28 and 82%-94%, respectively. Highly qualified applicants whose academic qualifications place them above the middle 50% of students admitted last year on both test score and HSPR have an excellent chance of admission. Applicants whose scores place them below the middle 50% on one or both of these criteria will need to present strong factors in the Personal Statement that offset their less competitive academic credentials.
There is a one time charge to students admitted to the Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Special Education and the Secondary Education Minor Certification Programs. This is a non-refundable clinical experience fee of $676.00 (subject to change with Board of Trustee approval) for those admitted for fall 2010. This fee partially covers costs associated with early field and student teaching experiences.
