Section 5: Audio, Video and Messaging
Audio & Video | Messaging (AIM)
Audio
Being able to communicate with others is an integral element that makes the Education Online experience so unique. In order to communicate with the instructors and peers, you will need to purchase an audio headset that also has microphone capabilities.
- We have a list of recommended headsets that will provide you with a basic idea of what we expect students to have.
- If you already have a working headset with microphone capabilities, we have created an Audio Environment Setup Guide to help you configure your headset to the specifications of Education Online.
- Once your headset is established to the specifications of Education Online, you should configure it to work with Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) as well by going to the Blackboard Collaborate Technical Support Page (under the 'First Time Users' banner).
Video
Education Online utilizes QuickTime as its primary media player to allow students to access audio and video files within courses.
Is QuickTime already installed in your computer?
- Yes: Click here to ensure you can play files like those Education Online uses.
- No: Please go to the Student Software Site (under "Players & Plug-Ins"), and install QuickTime. Then click here to test it.
Messaging
AOL Instant Messenger(AIM)
Use of AIM is optional, though Education Online recommends you install the program as it may be used in some course activities. If we are having severe technical problem with Elluminate some nights, AIM serves as a viable backup option. AIM is also a good way to discuss class with your peers outside of the classroom! Another major benefit of AIM is that you can contact the Education Online technical support team at any point during class and get a much quicker response (the AIM addresses are: LDL TechHelp, HREUIUC, or CTERTech; the AIM address depends on what program you are in)!
AIM is free to use and does NOT require you to subscribe to AOL's online service in any way. However, if you already use AOL, your AIM screen name can be the same as your AOL screen name.
If you do not have AIM on your computer, please download and install it from our Student Software Site (NOTE: there is a different download for Mac and PC). If you try using AIM via a LAN connection, like those often found at a workplace, you may have difficulty with AIM because of firewalls. Should you choose to attend class from work, please ensure that no firewalls inhibit your ability to have effective communication.
