Section 3: Passwords

University Login/Password | Elluminate Login/Password | Managing Passwords

Information on Passwords

There are four different passwords you need to have in order to access the resources used in Education Online courses.

The first three passwords belong to the University and are your Net ID, Enterprise, and Active Directory (AD) passwords. Please note that your login (NetID) for all three passwords will be the same throughout your time at Illinois. Of all the passwords, your NetID password is the most important to remember because it is used to maintain and change the other passwords. The last but not the least is the Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) login/password, which is used as a backup method of accessing synchronous sessions.

The following instructions will help you maintain and change your own passwords through web-based interfaces. Note that no one can tell you your passwords, though the organizations in charge can reset your passwords.

University Login/Passwords

1 ) NetID Password is sometimes called the "Bluestem password" is the MOST IMPORTANT password for you to know. If you know your NetID password you can change (most of) your other passwords, so it is very important that you keep this password secure. If another person accessed your NetID, this person could change your other passwords, access your student records, withdraw you from the University, charge things to your student account, and various other nasty things. In a nutshell, please protect all of your passwords because if someone were to steal your Illinois identity, it would become a very difficult situation for all parties to control.

CITES initially issues you a NetID and password when you first become an Illinois student, but you'll need to activate it online. To claim/activate your NetID for the first time, click here. Once you have activated your NetID, please change the NetID password to something that is personal so only you will know it.

  • What if I forget my NetID password?
    • Forgetting your NetID password will result in significant problems for you as well as Campus Service Units. Should you forget your password, you have to contct the CITES Office to obtain a new password. CITES will only issue a new password if you show up in person (with a photo ID). Off-campus students can use the following faxed documentation to reset their NetID password.
  • You can avoid the inconvenience by setting up security questions, which is highly recommended. Once you establish your security questions, you can use this option to reset your NetID password if you forget it. To set up your security questions go to this site (highly recommended): https://passwords.cites.uiuc.edu/.
  • If you just want to change your NetID password (which we recommend doing on a regular basis), go to the CITES password change page and click on the website link for NetworkID. Changing your current NetID password requires that you know your current password.

2 ) Enterprise Password is used for U of I Integrate, which is sometimes referred to as Banner, is what you use to register for courses, view class schedules & grades, access finantial statements, and change personal information. (Note: If you are a non-degree student, create login/password at Online and Continuing Education Registration Site and use your OCE login/password to register.)

  • What if I forget my Enterprise password?
    • Go to U of I Enterprise Applications page and click on the blue link that says obtain your EnterpriseID and set up your Enterprise Password. From here you will create your Enterprise password, but to do so will require that you know your NetID password.

3 ) Active Directory (AD) Password is used for many networking tasks; it is also most commonly used in Education Online to access the Learning Management System (Moodle), Illinois student email, Netfiles (a web based publishing and file storage service), and the College of Education student webfolders.

  • To change the AD password, access CITES Password Manager (click here).
  • Click Log in with your NetID and password button.
    • Enter your NetID and password
    • Enter new password and verify them (make sure all the password rules are met!)
    • Click on Set Password
  • What if I forget my AD password?
    • Go to the CITES Password Manager and reset your AD password. Again, you will need to know your NetID password, which is why we keep reiterating the importance of you remembering your NetID password.
  • Need help? Check the FAQ page for answers to your questions about AD password (click here).

Password Assistance is offered by Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES). Contact information and hours for the CITES Helpdesk are available at: http://www.cites.illinois.edu/help

Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) Login/Password

When logging into your (Moodle) course, you'll automatically have access to Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) via the link found within the course. However, in case you need to login to your Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) synchronous session separately (from http://www.elluminate.com/), here is your login and password information:

  • Your Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) login is: "NetID-UIUC" (ex: jdoe-UIUC)
  • Your Password is: "NetID" (ex: jdoe)

You cannot change your Elluminate (or Blackboard Collaborate) ID or Password. Doing so would break the authentication that allows you to access Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) through Moodle.

How to Manage Your Passwords (CITES Password Vault)

PasswordVault is a free program that securely stores all of your passwords on your computer. PasswordVault can store passwords related to your University computing accounts and whatever other passwords you choose to store, such as personal banking accounts and the like. No matter how many passwords you store, you need to remember only your master password to access all of them. For more information, please refer to the following links.
