The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Michigan law on April 22 that banned the use of race as a factor in college admissions. The ruling came approximately a month ahead of the 60th anniversary (May 17) of the court’s historic Brown v. Board of Education decision, which declared separate public schools for black students and white students unconstitutional.

In this Illinois News Bureau “A Minute With …” interview, Gutgsell Professor James D. Anderson, who will deliver the 11th annual Brown Lecture in Education Research on Oct. 23 in Washington, D.C., discussed the legacy of the Brown ruling and the affirmative action decision. Anderson is the head of the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership and a member of the National Academy of Education.
