University Primary School Raises Funds for Haiti via Annual Art Exhibit

UPS' annual art exhibit photoAfter learning that one classmate's family had crafted a quilt for earthquake victims in Haiti, Rebecca Johnson's preschool students voiced their intent to do the same with a patchwork of burlap, paper squares and buttons. In the end, however, the students brainstormed a different plan.

"Instead of sending our quilt to Haiti, the preschool students decided to raffle off the quilt and give the money as a donation to the Haiti Relief Fund," said Johnson, Head Preschool Teacher at University Primary School.

That quilt, along with other collaborative and individual masterpieces was unveiled Feb. 26 at the University Primary School's Annual Art Exhibition, hosted in the third-floor lounge at the College of Education.

"The art show opening brought together many of our families and community members," Johnson said, adding that the students raised more than $500 with a pizza sale, bake sale and raffle.

For inspiration, students were asked to share their family traditions that involved art with their classmates. From watercolor and bas relief to murals and sculptures, the exhibit will remain open to the public until March 12. Johnson said she hopes many will stop by "to enjoy the artwork made by 3-7-year-olds from University Primary School."
