Stephanie Cheng, a senior in Elementary Education, was a recipient of the 2013-2014 Fred S. Bailey Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding leadership and fellowship. The scholarship has been bestowed by the University YMCA since 1957. According to the Y, the scholarship was established to give financial support to Illinois students who demonstrate unique skills and talents that allow them to make a difference as community leaders.

Cheng was commended for her work in campus sustainability through Students for Environmental Concerns, as well as an administrative representative and social justice leader with the Christian Fellowship.

Recipients of the Fred S. Bailey Scholarship were honored by the University YMCA on September, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Phyllis Wise was the keynote speaker for the event.

Fred S. Bailey emphasized the University YMCA’s mission to develop and nurture ethical leaders at Illinois, regardless of major or field of study. Over $100,000 in scholarships are awarded each year, rewarding students with a record of volunteer work, intelligence, evidence of thoughtful consideration of social issues, involvement in their community, and a history of community service.
