Maya Israel, assistant professor of Special Education, has recently coauthored a new book titled “A Survival Guide for New Special Educators.” According to the authors, the book provides what every Special Education teacher needs to know "to survive and thrive.”

“My colleagues and I wrote this book because we wanted new special education teachers to have a concise, practical, and reliable resource with critical information that they will need as they start their careers,” Israel said.

This collaborative effort was accomplished with the help of three other professors from universities across the country, who are coauthors of the book: Bonnie Billingsley from Virginia Tech, Mary Brownell from The University of Florida, and Margaret Kamman from the University of Florida.

Israel’s book is unique in the way that it targets new special education teachers and covers a wide range of materials. It includes everything from prepping for a new school year to behavior management, creating efficient IEPs, and more. The guide is packed with researched-backed topics, and provides classroom-tested strategies from highly trained special educators like Israel.

Within the book are forms, checklists, and tools that special educators can use daily to ensure that their special needs students get the high quality attention they need.

“My hope is that the readers can take the real-world, applied advice presented in the book and apply it in their own practice to help them consider ways of supporting students with disabilities,” Israel said.
