Visiting Programmer

The Department of Educational Policy Studies is seeking applications for a Visiting Programmer. The Visiting Programmer will be the principal developer of the Writing Assistant software, including planning, designing, coding and testing. The Visiting Programmer will also be responsible for programming, monitoring, evaluating, testing, implementing, documenting and updating the systems software that will be developed to support the Assess-As-You-Go Writing Assistant.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with project faculty to develop functional and technical specifications to meet the project's objectives.
  • Analyze project specifications and initiate iterative software development process to meet the functional requirements of the project.
  • Research and evaluate suitable relevant technologies that can be incorporated into the software.
  • Test, debug and implement the software.
  • Manage and participate in the development of documentation related to the software, including scholarly publications and presentations, materials for users and IT professionals.
  • Liaise with senior faculty and project leaders, software users and IT professionals.
  • Collaborate with other technology experts in the College of Education.
  • Adjust software performance by monitoring, measuring, recording, and reporting the utilization and efficiency of the system and assist with predicting the "life" of the system.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and remedy system software failures.

Preferred Education and Experience

Education: A Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in software development and a proven capacity to deliver software development projects
  • A user-needs orientation
  • The ability to work well in a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A high-level awareness of and the ability to learn and master new technologies
  • The ability to combine expertise and good judgment to further goals of project

Knowledge and expertise in the following areas essential:
Software development
User interface design

High level knowledge and expertise in some of the following areas desirable:
Programming, with a preference for Ruby and Rails
Semantic tagging: taxonomies, folksonomies, etc.
Natural language processing
Computer-assisted psychometrics

Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Appointment Status: Visiting, 100 %-time appointment.
