Program Description

The Municipal Infant-Toddler Centers and Preschools in the city of Reggio Emilia, Italy are some of the best known and most visited early childhood programs in the world. Join us in November to find out what is so special about these wonderful schools.

The Office of International Programs in the College of Education is offering a 2-week study abroad experience to the Centro Internacionale Loris Malaguzzi with visits to local schools. The second week will include touring in Venice and Florence as part of our investigation of how the Reggio Emilia schools reflect Italian culture and history.

The trip will include:

*5 days of study at the Centro Internacionale Loris Malaguzzi

*Visits to 4 local schools in Reggio Emilia

*A guided tour of Florence, including the Galleria dell'Accademica and the Uffizi Gallery

*A walking tour of Venice

*Time to explore these beautiful cities on your own

*This trip is reserved for Juniors and Seniors in Early Childhood Education and masters and doctoral students from any program in the College of Education.

The students will leave from Chicago on Friday, November 10 arrive in Reggio Emilia on November 11. We will stay in Reggio Emilia until November 18 at Hotel Posta, one of the oldest hotels in Italy. While we are there, we will attend a week-long study group at the Loris Malaguzzi International Center where we will learn about the Reggio Emilia approach from Reggio teachers and pedagogistas. We will also be able to visit some schools.

On November 18, we will travel by train to Venice. We will be staying at Hotel Antiche Figure, a boutique hotel on the Grand Canal. We will have time to explore Venice together and separately work on making connections between what we find and what we have learned from Reggio Emilia. Then on November 21, we will travel by train to Florence, where we will be staying in Hotel Art Atelier, another boutique hotel near the Florence Duomo. We will explore Florence, again together and separately, to make additional connections to Reggio Emilia. We will have Thanksgiving dinner together in Florence. We will fly back to Chicago on November 25.
