Mixed Mode Programs

The College of Education's commitment to flexibility is reflected in our online/on-campus mixed program options, which allow students to maximize the time they spend in their home country while receiving the benefits of study at the University of Illinois campus.

For example, students may undertake a Doctoral program by enrolling initially in an online Masters of Education (EdM) or Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) program. When the online program is complete, highly qualified students may apply to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program. Students admitted to the Doctoral program then come to the US, to the University of Illinois, where they complete up to two years of course work and develop their program of research.

After completion of this work, students return to their home country to conduct dissertation research, and only return to the US to defend their PhD. Such an online/on-campus option allows students to complete their PhD in as few as four years, with no more than two years in the US. Doctoral study may be pursued in each of the well-established areas of research, as well as in new and emerging areas of individual student interest, such as entrepreneurial leadership education.

It is also possible for EdM students to pursue a part of their program on-campus, while competing the program online.
