Software
All software required for HRE Online is available on our Student Software Site. You do not need to install all of the software on the site, only the software specifically listed below (if it's not already installed). To participate in this orientation and your courses, you must have the following software installed on your computer:
- A Web Browser. We highly recommend that you have more than one browser installed on your machine. Please use Firefox 2.0 or higher, Netscape 8.0 or higher, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher, or Opera 9.0 or higher.
Note: To determine which version you are using, open your browser, click on "Help" at the top, select "About Firefox," or "About Internet Explorer." The version will show in the window that opens.
- QuickTime. QuickTime is the standard media player used in HRE Online.
- AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). AIM provides instant communication and assistance with the technical support team, and your classmates and instructors. The screen name for the technical support team is HRE UIUC. Please add it to your AIM Buddy List, once you have installed it. You do not need to be an AOL subscriber to use AIM.
- Microsoft PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer. PowerPoint is a slideshow creation and viewing tool. Many computers have PowerPoint installed as a factory default. If yours does not, PowerPoint viewer is available on the Student Software Site.
- Additional Software and Hardware Requirements can be found on the Technology Requirements Page.
If there is a program you need to purchase, once you have your UIUC NetID (after you register), you can purchase it and receive a student discount at the UIUC Central Computing Store or CITES WebStore.

Additional Student Resources
After you've registered, there are some additional resources you will have access to:
- i-card: The i-card gives students borrowing privileges at the ILCSO consortium libraries (academic libraries throughout Illinois) and also serves as the University of Illinois identification card. The i-card is available by completing the ID request form (to get a pictureless version) or by visiting the Urbana ID Center (to get a card with a picture).
- Illinois Library Resources: Library resources are available electronically, through the mail, and by visiting physical libraries.
- Writing Assistance/Consulting: Assistance with writing and reading skills is provided free of charge to online graduate students through the Writers Workshop. Writers Workshop consultants can meet with you over the telephone, online, or face-to-face to assist you during various stages of course or non-course projects.
