Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I become involved in the COE Graduate Student Conference?
A: Come aboard and help build community! There are a several ways to get involved with the conference. We are looking for students to serve in the following ways:
- Proposal Reviewers - includes reviewing proposals for acceptance.
- Technology Support - includes coordinating technology for presentations, being available for support as needed throughout conference.
- Logistics Committee - includes organizing the reception and luncheon, and/or helping to implement conference registration and conference-day logistics.
- Marketing Commitee - includes public relations and advertising for the conference.
Not sure what you want to do but want to help anyway? That’s OK! This is intended to be a fully collaborative effort across the college and any graduate student from any department are encouraged to volunteer. Q: How can faculty become involved in the COE Graduate Student Conference?
A: We would love to have faculty involvement in this conference! Faculty can sign up to serve as session discussants as well as help facilitate thematic roundtable discussions during lunch. Faculty who volunteer to be discussants will receive a copy of each paper abstract two weeks prior to the conference. Faculty will be asked to select up to five keywords (http://education.illinois.edu/frp/search) that represent scholarly areas they are interested in discussing. Faculty interested in guiding roundtable discussions will be asked to help foster the theme of this conference, building communities of research and practice, among graduate students from across all departments during lunch. Q: What types of scholarly work will be considered for acceptance in this conference?
A: Just about anything! Term papers/projects, Research Specialization Capstone Projects, Early Research Projects, Doctoral Dissertation, among many others, are all eligible for presentation at this conference.
Q: What criteria are being used for paper, symposia, poster and alternative format submissions?
A: Consistent with national educational conference criteria (mainly, the American Educational Research Association), the graduate student conference will evaluate proposals based on the following general guidelines:
- (a) Objective or purpose
- (b) Perspective(s) or theoretical framework
- (c) Methods, techniques or modes of inquiry
- (d) Data sources, empirical materials, evidence*
- (e) Results, substantiated conclusions, warrants for argument
- (f) Scientific or scholarly significance
Proposals that address these areas are welcome.
*It is understood that theoretical or methodological papers will include information that is consistent with those genres of scholarly work.
Q: What qualifies as an alternative format for presenting?
A: An alternative format is a presentation format other than paper, symposia, or poster. Examples include poetry, performance, photography and visual representations, among others.
Q: Who reviews the submissions?
A: The Planning Committee is currently recruiting graduate students to volunteer to participate in reviewing proposals. All proposal reviews will be conducted anonymously by COE graduate student volunteers and we encourage you to join us! If you are interested in serving as a proposal reviewer,see the Call for Reviewers page. When you sign-up, you will be asked to choose up to FIVE keywords from (http://education.illinois.edu/frp/search). Q: Can anyone volunteer to review submissions or are there eligibility requirements for reviewing?
A: Any current COE graduate student can volunteer to review. Reviewers will be sent instructions, review criteria, and proposals electronically. All reviews will be conducted electronically. Volunteers will be asked to select up to five keywords (http://education.illinois.edu/frp/search) that represent scholarly areas they are comfortable in reviewing. Q: When will presenters be notified?
A: Presenters will be notified of selection in early March, approximately one month prior to the conference.
Q: Do I have to submit the full paper before the conference?
A: Submission of a full paper is not required for any presentation format. However, paper presentations and symposia papers are expected to be based on a completed paper and presenters should be prepared for questions as if the paper is complete.
Q: Can I submit multiple proposals, for example a poster and paper?
A: Yes, multiple proposal submissions are allowed and encouraged. The maximum number of presentations for one individual is 3.
Q: Will co-authored proposals be accepted or individual works only? Can co-authors co-present?
A: Papers and proposals can be co-authored. There are no restrictions on co-authors with the exception that one author must be a current UIUC graduate student (i.e., co-authors can be faculty, students outside the COE, undergraduates, etc.). Since this conference is targeted toward COE graduate students, COE graduate students on the proposal are expected to deliver the majority of the presentation.
Q: Is attendance limited to only COE students, faculty and staff or open to the campus and community?
A: The main audience for the conference is COE graduate students, faculty, and staff, but conference attendance (non-presenters) is open to the campus and community.
Q: Is there a registration or lunch fee?
A: Electronic registration for the conference is required and registration will open in February. There is not a registration fee or lunch fee.
Q: Do I have to use PowerPoint for my presentation?
A: Presentations do NOT require Powerpoint. A laptop, projector, and audio will be provided if Powerpoint or other visual imagery will be used. Additional technology requests will be solicited in the online proposal submission form. COE Powerpoint templates are available for optional use at the following website: http://education.illinois.edu/cio/communications/powerpoint.html.
Q: Can students with an Education joint degree program but in a non-COE department submit proposals?
A: Yes. If this applies to you, please clarify your degree program in your proposal.
Q: Will posters be on display throughout the conference?
A: Posters will be on display in the COE lobbies throughout the conference. Depending on the number of proposals, a specific session may be dedicated to posters. If this is the case, you will have the opportunity to accompany your poster and interact with conference attendees.
