College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Program of Study in Philosophy of Education

The program of study in Philosophy of Education is designed to allow students to pursue a course of study, in consultation with their advisors, that will help them develop a broad orientation to the methods and issues of the discipline, along with a focused area of emphasis. Students are also strongly encouraged to develop at least one cognate area, outside of their philosophical study, from other strengths in the EPS department and/or other areas of study from the college.

Program Guides

The program of study in Philosophy of Education emphasizes building a strong scholarly community among its faculty and students. It sponsors a Philosophy of Education Discussion Group , which provides the faculty and students a forum of discussion for work in progress and current issues and topics in philosophy of education. Visitors, invited speakers, and affiliated faculty also regularly present work to the Philosophy of Education Discussion Group.

The journal Educational Theory sponsors an Editorial Discussion Group for the purpose of giving students an introduction and "inside look" into the publishing of a top journal.

The program of study in Philosophy of Education places a special emphasis on professional mentoring as well as academic preparation. Toward this end, students are strongly encouraged to present work at Regional and National Conferences .

Prof. Burbules has produced a collection of Web-based resources on Philosophy and Theory that you might find useful.

Some of the faculty have found the following guide helpful: Professor James Pryor's "Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper"
