Research Biography

My recent research focus has been on the development and use of online educational technologies for writing assessment. I currently coordinate The Assess-As-You Go Writing Assistant: A Student Work Environment that Brings Together Formative and Summative Assessment, a U.S. Department of Education grant that involves the development and testing of a new online writing environment that delivers formative and summative assessment information to students and teachers.

Past research interests have been in the areas of religion and education; autonomy facilitating curriculum; the influence of market ideology and media on student academic integrity; and the stigmatization of social service language. I am co-author of the Institute of Education Sciences grant 'Assessing Complex Performance: A Postdoctoral Training Program Researching Students Writing and Assessment in Digital Workspaces' (award amount: $659,375; dates: 2011-2014). In 1998 I also co-authored a grant from the Illinois Arts Council for a Mural Painting Project with artist Glen Davies at Westview School (award amount: $15,500).
