Colloquium Series on Culture and Development
The goal of the Social Development Consortium is to foster cross-disciplinary discussions regarding seminal issues in social development. This year the theme is on how culture shapes development across the life span. We will focus on the dynamic nature of culture, exploring how historical change, immigration, and change within culture create contexts for development.

Dr. French studies children’s friendships and conflicts across multiple cultures including Indonesia, Korea, and the United States.

Marcela Raffaelli
Human and Community Development, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Dr. Raffaelli’s research focuses on the development of adolescents’ sexual risk taking in Latino families. She also studies Brazillian impoverished youth.

Peggy Miller

Dr. Miller studies socialization and the acquisition of culture in early childhood, with an emphasis on the role of everyday talk.

Dr. Li studies beliefs about learning among children, adolescents, and adults living in China and the United States.
Xinyin Chen

Dr. Chen’s research is concerned with the role of social change in children’s social functioning in China as well as other countries.
The Colloquium Series on Culture and Development is supported by the Departments of Educational Psychology, Human and Community Development, and Psychology, and the School of Social Work.
