Service Level Definition: Network Connectivity

Description

CIO, in conjunction with CITES, provides access to the UIUC network and internet via wired and wireless* connections.

* Wireless is available in the Education Building only.

Who can use this service?

Any University faculty, staff and students. In short, anyone with a Network ID. Guest access is also available.

How does one request this service?

Please refer to the documentation at http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/cio/network/. Also http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/uiucnet/index.html.

What is expected of me and my unit?

Wired Connectivity Requirements -

  • Standard Ethernet enabled device
  • A Category 5 or 6 standard RJ-45 Ethernet cable
  • Operating system set to use DHCP service

What can I expect from this service?

All users with devices connected to the campus network are required to follow the University of Illinois Information Technology Policies , which includes

The College of Education also requires all users to follow the CITES Security guidelines , which includes

  • Required installation of antivirus software on all networked connected devices
  • All the latest security and system updates must be installed on client machines
What are the limits of the service?

Wired connectivity provides broadband network access.

Wireless connectivity provides 802.11b wireless standard connectivity for most for the Education building.

Problem response: Responses to problems, requests or feedback can be expected within 24 hours. Resolution is dependent upon type of request and our ability to respond to it.

When will the hosting service be available for use?

This service does not include programming or end user support for the hosted application or underlying infrastructure such as databases unless contracted separately for programming.

How and when will a patron be notified of changes or disruptions to this service?

Network connectivity will remain available except during system or other dependency failures or when routine maintenance is required. Routine maintenance, including OS and environment updates and patches will be performed as needed during scheduled maintenance periods.

CITES network maintenance schedules are dictated by the CITES TechComm group with distinct maintenance hours for Wireless service .

How can I determine the status of issues with the service?

Status on CITES services are available at http://status.cites.uiuc.edu.

Local service interruptions and outages will be published to the CIO web site under Service Alerts.

CIO's User Services at 244-6053 will also be kept aware of any issues with the service.

How do I get help?

CIO provides end user technical support consultation and on-line documentation.
