illinois.edu Project and the College of Education

The University's "illinois.edu" project has significant implications for many of us in the college. We have made and will be making a series of changes to web and email services at different times throughout the year. Because these changes aren't happening at the same time, you may be confused about what URLs and addresses to use and when.

Below is a brief summary of the email addresses and URLs you can use and should be using, along with some estimates of when future changes will take place.

Available now

Current Recommended Usage

Your Email Address

<netid>@illinois.edu

OR

<netid>@uiuc.edu

<netid>@illinois.edu

There is no rush to change your address, but all CITES services as of mid-June support the use of @illinois.edu for both your incoming and outgoing email.  Further, as of early June, the default address for new Express users is @illinois.edu.  Further yet, users as of August will be represented in PH as <netid>@illinois.edu.

College Email Addresses

<accountname>@education.illinois.edu
(e.g., admissions@education.illinois.edu)

OR

<accountname>@ed.uiuc.edu
(e.g., admissions@ed.uiuc.edu)

<accountname>@education.illinois.edu
(See NOTE below.)

Caveat: If you have a web site that uses an ed.uiuc.edu-based URL, you might consider continuing to use the @ed.uiuc.edu version for consistency...then change both when you are able to update your web site. See "Custom Web Site Domains" below for estimate of when hostnames based on new domain may be available.)

Primary College Web Site Domain

education.illinois.edu

OR any of the following:

www.education.illinois.edu
www.ed.uiuc.edu
ed.uiuc.edu

http://education.illinois.edu
for promotional purposes
(for print publications especially)

It is expected that URLs based on www.ed.uiuc.edu (and even the discouraged www.ed.illinois.edu) will be valid indefinitely.  See NOTE below.

Custom Web Site Domains

<custom>.ed.uiuc.edu

NOTE: Custom hostnames based on education.illinois.edu (aside from www.education.illinois.edu) are expected to be available to us sometime after Nov 1 2008.

<custom>.ed.uiuc.edu

For example, learn.ed.uiuc.edu.

Continue to use your current ed.uiuc.edu-based hostname until you are able to register your site in the new domain. (See NOTE below.)

NOTE: The College's domain of the future is education.illinois.edu, not ed.illinois.edu. While one hostname, www.ed.illinois.edu, has been registered with that domain for URLs, the use of ed.illinois.edu anywhere is discouraged in favor of education.illinois.edu.

Also reference the campus illinois.edu Domain Project site including resources such as a FAQ on the topic.

Below is a rough timeline of changes that are relevant to members of the College of Education community.

Public Affairs announced on 10/2/2008 that on November 1, CITES will be permitted to register any illinois.edu-based hostnames beyond those previously allowed because of their association with the Bright Futures campaign.
At this time, we will begin to cross-register all existing sites using uiuc.edu-based hostnames so they will be available in both uiuc.edu and illinois.edu domains concurrently.  Similarly, we will begin to cross-register all ed.uiuc.edu-based hostnames so those sites will be available in both ed.uiuc.edu and education.illinois.edu domains concurrently. We will also begin to establish the illinois.edu hostname as the default for all .edu-based sites that we host.

May 1, 2009 PHASE 2 BEGINS: Units are expected to start changing all links from uiuc.edu to illinoins.edu in "all web pages".
April 30, 2010 Links referencing secure (SSL-encrypted), uiuc.edu-based web pages should be changed to reference secure, illinois.edu-based web pages.
